Canadian Emu Oil Sask Ltd. of Carlyle, Saskatchewan.
Canadian Emu Oil Sask. Ltd. produces and manufactures emu oil products for skin care and nutraceutical products. Their products are available internationally to the complementary health care market, under the trade name Songlines Health Products. The POS connection with these products began with lab scale investigations into refining emu oil. Trials on several different oil types were undertaken to determine the best processing protocols, and the process was then scaled up to pilot plant scale. POS continues to carry out physical refining and deodorization of the oil through custom-manufacturing arrangements. “POS’s contribution toward oil processing, physical refining, and evaluating emu oil quality has been a key component to the success of our Saskatchewan-based company,” says Dr. Code. http://www.comfo.com/emu/about.htm
Philom Bios of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
Philom Bios is a world leading Inoculant Company with over 70 employees across North America in a wide range of research, manufacturing, marketing, and management positions. Head-quartered in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Philom Bios is a Canadian public company serving the needs of farmers with high-value inoculants and other fertility efficiency tools.
An inoculant is a live micro-organism which, when added to the soil or applied to the seed, gives growing plants access to important nutrients like nitrogen and phosphate. The micro-organisms which comprise the active ingredients of our products are derived from the soil and are naturally occuring.
Philom Bios developed the world's first and only commercial phosphate inoculant for all crops, called JumpStart, and have developed the world's first and only combination phosphate and nitrogen inoculant for pulse crops including soybeans, called TagTeam. These products generate, on average a 3:1 net return per acre, depending on the crop.
“We have developed two of our current production processes at POS,” says Greg Holloway, Philom Bios’ BioProcess Manager. “The development work done with the aid of experts at POS was invaluable. We use these two processes to make products that constitute 40% of our sales.” www.philombios.com

Laprell’s Beehive Products of North Battleford, Saskatchewan
Laprell’s Beehive Products produces, manufactures and markets honey, bee pollen, beeswax and propolis. Propolis is a resinous substance collected by bees from leaf buds and exudates of trees and conifers. It is reported to have antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiviral, and antifungal properties. Bees modify the original resin composition to produce the propolis, and use it as a sealing agent and to control the growth of microbes in the beehive.
POS’s role in creating Laprell’s Standardized Tincture of Propolis involved development and optimization of a process to extract and fractionate the bioactive compounds from raw propolis. POS first carried out investigations at the lab scale, then scaled up and transferred the technology to the Bioprocessing Centre in Saskatoon for processing on a larger scale. “POS continues to be a valuable asset for our company,”says company President Rudi Laprell. “The knowledgeable and friendly staff guided and supported the development of our product through all the different, sometimes challenging, processing stages. A big “thank you” to all the POS people involved.”
