Diesel Services Group (DSG Canada) of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
DSG is a Saskatoon company that does “all things diesel”. It has developed a line of custom designed bio-additives for diesel fuel. One new lubricant, BioArmor, was developed with the support of POS. It is manufactured from Canadian-grown vegetable oils. It burns cleaner than petrochemical diesel fuel and offers superior lubrication and cleaning to reduce engine wear and improve overall performance.

“Lubricity is just one issue for Canadian diesel fuel,” says Brett Jenson, Business and Market Development at DSG. “With the declining quality of Canadian diesel fuel, and with Kyoto protocols coming into effect in 2006, there are other issues such as lower cetane, water in the fuel, gumming, etc.”. Now we’ve added BioArmor to our full line of diesel fuel additives so that together, our products deal with all of these critical issues and offer a “green”, more effective solution.”Diesels that fly...wanna know why? www.dieselservices.com

Canagra Technologies of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
Pomegranate specialist Mr. Ashraf Abdellatif of Canagra Technologies, has developed a powdered extract of pomegranate for use in nutraceutical and functional food applications. Studies suggest that pomegranates possess properties that may have beneficial health applications for cardiovascular conditions and certain kinds of cancer. The studies investigate the fruit’s antioxidant – particularly flavonoids, and ellagic acid. Other studies suggest that pomegranates are also a natural alternative to hormone replacement therapy for relieving symptoms of menopause.

To capture the potential of pomegranates for nutraceutical applications, Ashraf came to POS Pilot Plant.; Together, Ashraf and POS staff developed and processed the pomegranate extract on a lab scale. They prepared prototype samples, and undertook preliminary pilot plant scale processes.

The final product is a powdered extract that is available in four formats developed to suit different functional applications. He says, “POS Pilot Plant is world-renowned as the best source of laboratory, analytical and pilot plant work. I believe it is best for its knowledgeable, experienced and innovative people. Its services are most comprehensive.”

Wolf Trax Inc. of Winnipeg, Manitoba
Wolf Trax Inc. of Winnipeg, Manitoba develops innovative micronutrient products for use in agricultural and horticultural crops. The company manufactures and markets micronutrients coated with a unique DDPTM (Dry dispersible Powder) formulation incorporating boron, copper, manganese, zinc, calcium, and iron. The DDP formulation offers flexibility in application, improved plant access to nutrients, improved nutrient uptake, sustained release, reduced application rates and improved cost efficiencies in shipping and storage.

DDP Micronutrients can be used in several application methods: as foliar spray, as a coating on dry fertilizer blends, or as a seed treatment product. The ability to coat both dry fertilizer prills and seed with micronutrients, leads to improved uptake by the plant as it emerges and as it matures.

Wolf Trax chose POS Pilot Plant to refine and finalize the process needed to commercialize the innovative dry dispersible powder. “We wanted a high quality product that would easily and thoroughly coat dry fertilizer prills, and provide improved uptake,”says Kerry Green, Managing Director of Wolf Trax.“Dr. Nelson Tang of POS Pilot Plant was instrumental in helping us develop the formulation and drying process for the DDP micronutrients.”After developing a prototype in the laboratory, Tang took it to pilot plant scale to ensure that the product could be produced successfully in the Wolf Trax manufacturing facilities. The company was pleased with the results.“With the help of POS, we have a highly concentrated, high quality, dry dispersible powder that improves performance,”states Green. www.wolftrax.org.

Oils of Aloha, Oahu, Hawaii
Oils of Aloha produces gourmet cooking and salad oils from macadamia nut oil, and skin and hair care products formulated with kukui oil and unique botanical ingredients. Over a decade ago when Chairman Dana Gray recognized that future market growth would be dependent on establishing and documenting consistently high standards of quality, he contacted POS Pilot Plant. With POS’s oils processing services and guidance, Oils of Aloha was able to achieve their goals.

Today, Oils of Aloha is a rapidly-growing business. Kukui oil has earned a reputation as a luxurious ingredient for personal care products, for providing relief for symptoms of eczema and psoriasis, and for soothing skin irritated by radiation treatment. As popular as the cosmetic items are, it is cooking oil made from macadamia nuts, which is making waves. Media reports refer to it as a “low-carb miracle oil’ that beats heart disease. With 80% mono-unsaturated oil, consumers agree and are rushing to purchase it.

Dana Gray is quick to credit POS Pilot Plant for their role. We could not have grown without POS,” he states. “They have been a major part of our success. My thanks to POS for a world of help!” www.oilsofaloha.com
