FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 25, 2009

POS Pilot Plant in Sydney Australia Sept. 27-30/09

Meet POS In Sydney Australia
Make an appointment to meet with POS Senior Scientist, Udaya Wanasundara, Ph.D. in Sydney Australia.

Dr. Wanasundara is presenting a poster at the World Congress on Fats and Oils and 28th ISF Congress on September 28th. It is entitled:

PREPARATIVE AND INDUSTRIAL SCALE ISOLATION AND PURIFICATION OF POLYUNSATURATED FATTY ACIDS (OMEGA-3 AND OMEGA-6). The abstract is below:

Long-chain omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have become an important subject in both the scientific community and our everyday life, and we encounter them in pharmaceutical and/or health applications as well as in food applications. Amongst these applications, PUFA's have attracted especial attention due to their role in human health and nutrition. Essential fatty acids cannot be synthesized de novo by humans and therefore, need to be obtained from the diet. With the growing public awareness of the nutritional benefits of PUFA’s, the market for such products is expected to grow in the future.

Docosahexaenoic (DHA), eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and gamma linoleic (GLA) acids are the most widely used PUFA in nutraceuticals and functional foods. They are being used in a wide array of products ranging from dietary supplements to infant formulas. Naturally, these fatty acids are associated with other lipophilic compounds and effective separation and isolation techniques are needed to recover them in concentrated forms.

At POS Pilot Plant Corp., we are capable of producing concentrated forms of PUFAs (from natural sources) in small- or large-scale quantities via different techniques. This presentation focuses on some of the new methodologies that we are able to provide in addition to the capabilities at present.
